Glossary
|
C
- Carbide Punch: A tool used to create an impression in a metal and can be made from solid carbide and available in many shapes and forms such a round, square, D and used for piercing, perforation, pilot
- Coil Spring: Helical spring manufactured from wire
- Cutting tool: Various shapes and sizes and worked by hand or machinery, consisting
essentially of a thin blade or disk of metal
- Conveyor: Normally a motorised continuous chain or belt (conveyor belt) for conveying components
D
- Decoiler: A mechanical reel used to dispense steel coil material normally in to a power press or rollforming line
- Design: A graphic representation, especially a detailed plan for manufacture
- Drafting: The systematic representation and dimensional specification of mechanical structures
- Die Spring: Helical spring manufactured from spring steel wire or chrome vanadium
F
- Feeder: A device that feeds material into a machine for further processing, normally pneumatic or mechanical
G
- Gas Spring: A type of spring that, unlike a typical metal spring, uses a compressed gas, contained in a cylinder and variably compressed by a piston to exert a force. Gas springs are used frequently used in press tools or plastic moulds to manufacture pressed components or plastic parts
- Guarding of machinery: Normally via a mechanical means such as mesh or fencing and also via electric light guarding or safety curtains
- Guide Bush: Used as a component in the manufacture of a press tool, die set or plastic mould and paired with a guide pin
- Guide Pin: Used as a component in the manufacture of a press tool, die set or plastic mould and paired with a guide bush
H
- Hydraulic Press: A hydraulic mechanism for applying a large compressive force and used in conjunction with tooling to produce press metal parts. It is the hydraulic equivalent of a mechanical press
L
- Lubricator: A device dispensing oil to lubricate steel material
M
- Metal Stamping: A method that can encompass punching, coining, bending and several other ways of modifying raw metal material
- Mechanical Press: A metalworking machine used to shape or cut metal
- Metrology: The measurement of surfaces, quantify physical size, calibration, used in quality assurance procedures
- Milling: Shaping of metal and other solid materials
- Manufacturing: The use of machines, tools and/or labour to produce a finished product
N
- Nitrogen Gas Spring: A type of spring that, unlike a typical metal spring, uses a compressed gas, contained in a cylinder and variably compressed by a piston to exert a force. Nitrogen gas springs are used frequently used in press tools or plastic moulds to manufacture pressed components or plastic parts
P
- Power Press: A metalworking machine used to shape or cut metal
- Progressive Stamping: A metalworking method that can encompass punching, coining, bending and several other ways of modifying raw metal material and usually combined with an automatic coil handling and feeding system. Also known as follow on tooling
- Punch: Used in metalworking. A tool used to create an impression in a metal and can be made from HSS, solid carbide, TiCN coated and available in many shapes and forms such a round, square, D and used for piercing, perforation
R
- Roll Forming: A continuous bending operation in which a long strip of metal (typically coiled steel) is passed through a consecutive set of rolls, or stands, each performing only an incremental part of the bend until the desired cross-section profile is obtained. Roll forming is ideal for producing parts with long lengths or in large quantities. Also spelt rollforming
S
- Stamping Press: A metalworking machine used to shape or cut metal
- Spring: Helical spring manufactured from wire
T
- Tool making: A process whereby a toolmaker (Tool and Die maker) being a highly skilled tradesman manufactures press tools, jigs, fixture, molds, gauges and other tools used in the manufacturing process
U
- Uncoiler: A mechanical reel used to dispense steel coil material normally in to a stamping press
